Defender Regenerative Media Filter

Defender Regenerative Media Filter

The Defender regenerative media filter provides exceptional water filtration capabilities, along with significant water and energy savings when compared to sand filtration. It has rapidly replaced sand filters as the premier choice for water filtration in various recreational water applications.

Regenerative media filters provide substantial savings in the everyday operational costs of an aquatics facility. To highlight potential savings, Neptune Benson can evaluate your current facility (or upcoming project) and demonstrate a cost saving analysis report, outlining the savings in water, energy, chemical consumption and required footprint when compared to a conventional sand filter.

WATER SAVINGS

Due to its innovative “bumping” process the Defender RMF systems significantly eliminate the amount of backwash water going to the drain. Instead of backwashing, the Defender filter is programmed to automatically “bump” to regenerate the fine-grade perlite media for a fresh start. After approximately 4 weeks of “bumping” the perlite may be saturated with dirt particles and require a quick media replacement.

CONSTRUCTION SAVINGS

The Defender RMF technology represents what it truly means to be a compact filter. The small footprint requirement results in as little as one-fourth to one-sixth of the space required by an equivalently sized sand system, saving on installation costs, rigging time and more. With a much lower operating weight, the Defender filter reduces the extent to which the floor slab must be engineered. When building costs are at an estimated $75 to $150 per square foot, selecting a Defender filter could generate construction savings in the tens of thousands of dollars. In older facilities where expanding the footprint is not an option, this technology will enable you to achieve your goals while utilizing your current footprint.

POWER SAVINGS

The Defender filter reduces head loss when compared to traditional sand filters, ultimately saving motor horsepower operational costs. Starting differential pressures for a high-rate sand filter, depending on the media, could range from 4 to 6 psi (27.6 kpa to 41.4 kpa). In contrast, the starting differential of the Defender filter is approximately 1 psi (6.9 kpa).

Converting this to head represents savings of nearly 12 feet (3.65m) total dynamic head, or TDH, which directly translates to horsepower and energy savings. For example utilizing a 25hp motor instead of a 30hp unit would result in electricity savings of $3,000 per year.

PREMIUM WATER QUALITY WITH SAFETY TOP OF MIND

The Defender filter removes particles down to 1 micron in size. With the growing concerns of recreational waterborne illnesses (RWI) such as cryptosporidiosis, the smaller the particle removal the better the water quality and safety of your bathers. The Defender filter is especially effective on pools with heavy bather loads because of the increased filter area and dirt holding capacity.

With its fine filtration capabilities the Defender filter will also delay the increase in turbidity. The high-performance filtration capabilities, along with the reduction of make-up water due to minimizing backwash cycles, reduces the chemical requirements and the associated turbidity buildup.

ENERGY & CHEMICAL SAVINGS

The dramatic reduction of backwash waste directly translates to savings in make-up water along with the chemicals and fuel for re-heating. Consider the cost of chemically treating 1.4 million gallons and the BTU’s required to heat this volume from 50 degrees (10 °C) to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 °C).

It is also important to note that the improved water quality generated by the Defender filter’s ability to remove finer particles will also save on general chemical consumption.

Estimated annual savings ranges from $42,000 to $52,000 depending on local fuel costs for oil, gas or electricity. This is based on the backwash water consumption of a typical waterpark attraction with a 2000 GPM (454 m3 /hr) recirculation rate.

DEFENDER ASSERO RMF FOR SMALL POOLS

The Defender Assero Regenerative Media Filter is specifically designed for smaller applications with flow rates between 60-420 gpm (14-95 m3/hr).  Its compact design saves space and will fit through a standard door frame while achieving the same pristine water quality as our standard Defender.
